Using the Toolbar

What’s a browser? What’s a toolbar? Help!

Don’t worry. The answer to both questions is looking right at you. The software you are using to look at this web site is called a browser.

The bar with images on at the top of your screen is called the browser toolbar. The toolbar on your browser looks something like this.

IE Toolbar

The browser toolbar is designed to make your browsing experience easier. Here is a brief explanation of the important buttons and what happens when you click on them:

IE Back buttonBack - goes back to the last page you were on. This is a very useful tool if you get lost when you’re browsing. Keep clicking the "back" button until you return to the page you want.

IR Forward buttonForward - goes forward to the last page you were on before you used the back button. However, if you didn’t use the back button, you won’t be able to go forward.

Important points:

  1. These buttons only take you to pages you have already been to. You can’t go back and forward to pages you haven’t already visited.
  2. The Back and Forward buttons on your browser toolbar are not the same as the next and previous buttons in this tutorial.

IE Stop buttonStop - If you change your mind about viewing a page, or it’s just taking too long to load, click on this button to stop the page loading.

Some more important points:

Remember, your browser toolbar will look and work the same no matter which website you are on. On the other hand, the site "navigation" (like the next and previous buttons in this tutorial) is specific to each site and will look different depending on which site you are in.

Using the Address box

Every page on the Internet has a unique address. This works the same way as your street address in specifying where the page is so your browser can find it.

How can you use an address to get somewhere? That’s easy. If you know the address of a page you want to go to, type it into the address bar of your browser and press the Enter key.

Jargon alert! The web site address or page address is also called a URL (pronounced like "earl") or Uniform Resource Locator.
